Reminder that this Friday, April 26th is our Native American Open House
The children should arrive at 8:00 to make last minute preparations. We will gather in the parking lot circle at 8:30 to greet our guests with a group poem. This will be followed by a tour of the classroom. Your child is eager to share with you the many exciting things they have learned and made over the last few months.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Please remember to check your child’s orange home/school folder for information about our bird walk. There will also be a notice within the next day or two about the upcoming MAG trip to the Hartford Science Center.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to call or send me an email.
AN OPPORTUNITY NOT TO BE MISSED
Dear Parents,
As a culmination of our study of Native American Indians we are planning an Open House on Friday, April 26th from 8:30 until about 9:15. Please have the children arrive at 8:10 to make last minute preparations. We will welcome the parents to our rooms with a poem at 8:30.
We hope you are able to join us for this joyous celebration of all of the children’s hard work. They are looking forward to sharing their expertise with you, teaching you about many of the exciting things we have studied, and showing off the projects they have made over the last few months.
Please mark your calendar. We look forward to having you join us.
Below I have copied the form for ordering field day t-shirts. No hard copy will be sent home. This form is being made available as a PDF on the “front” page of the Foote School Website.

The ninth grade is selling field day t-shirts as a fundraiser for its class gift. The shirts are available in either gray or maroon and cost $14 dollars each. (Kindergartners will receive a free t-shirt as a gift from their buddies from the class of 2013!)
To purchase a t-shirt, please complete the form below and return it with the total purchase price. Please complete a form for each t-shirt you wish to purchase (this helps us with accurate delivery) but please feel free to write one check (no cash please) for your total order.
Please deliver your order (check and form-s) to either Kelly Moran or Tristen Oifer at the Foote School front desk.
WE MUST RECEIVE ALL ORDERS BY MONDAY, APRIL 8. Please be aware that we will not be able to process late orders.

Today four of the world’s BEST MOMS came in to help sew moccasins with the children. We have 23 1/2 done and 10 1/2 to go! That is a lot farther along than we were at 8:30 this morning.
First thing Monday morning (right at 8:30) we will be going to the art room to work on stamping our Native American shirts. We will be using paint and natural objects like pinecones, leaves and bark to stamp designs and patterns on the shirts. It can be a bit messy so I am recommending that the children dress casually.
THE FUN JUST KEEPS GOING ON AND ON………
I guess the ground hog was correct when he said there would be six more weeks of winter! This one storm has more than made up for our relatively mild winter.
Here are a few things you might enjoy doing while you are at home waiting for school to resume. You are not required to do all of them, just pick a few that sound interesting to you.
1) Go outside and see if you can measure how deep the snow is near your house. Figure out the amount in inches and feet (and if you live in Hamden then maybe yard yards).
2) Measure 2 cups of snow and bring it in the house so it can melt. Once the snow melts measure how much water there is. Were you surprised at the amount of water?
3) Take one cup of snow and put it in a bowl. Take one large ice cube and put it in another bowl next to the snow. Which one melts more quickly, the snow or the ice? How long did it take for the snow and the ice to melt?
4) Write a Journal entry about what you have been doing since Friday and be sure to include an illustration or some photographs.
5) Try to imagine what it would have been like to be a Native American Indian living in a wigwam during a blizzard like this. Would it have been fun, scary or exciting? Write a story or a poem about it.
6) Make a list of all of the different ways that you can make 25 cents using pennies, nickels and dimes. Now do the same for 50 cents using pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.
7) Estimate the perimeter of your bedroom in feet and then get a ruler and measure the room. How close was your estimate?
8) Read a book and talk with your Mom or Dad about the story. Who was your favorite character and why? Did you like the ending? Can you imagine an alternate ending?
9) Finish working on the Valentines cards that you are going to bring to school for our celebration on Thursday.
10) Be sure and go outside and have fun, maybe build a snowman, a snow fort, or go sledding.
I hope you enjoy your time off. I miss you and look forward to seeing your smiling faces soon.
DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR SNOWPANTS, BOOTS, HATS AND GLOVES TO SCHOOL!
Dear Parents,

We hope everyone joins in the fun on Tuesday February 5th when all of the students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear maroon and grey to celebrate Spirit Day at Foote!
The plan is to celebrate school spirit by wearing Foote colors! The children can wear T-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants etc. Anything maroon and grey will be perfect.
Falco, the Foote School mascot, will visit all of the lower school classes at lunchtime!
If you want to buy Foote gear: It will be available at Movie Night on Fri., Feb. 1, or at the school store on Mon., Feb. 4 from 3-4 p.m. Newly arrived merchandise includes fleece blankets, sweatpants, and polo shirts.
If you can’t get to the school store during the listed hours, contact Cheryl Nadzam at [ mailto:ccallegro@mac.com ]ccallegro@mac.com.
We need to have 17 paper towel tubes (one for each child) to complete a project the children worked on in art class. If you have one or two that you can send it would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Sue and Allison
Please check your child’s orange Home/School folder this evening. There is some “homework” that you can help them with. Below is a copy of the instructions for completing the activity. Have fun!
January 17, 2013
Dear Parents,
We have recently begun a new unit of study in math. For the next couple of weeks we will be exploring the U S Customary system of linear measurement. Students have been exploring length using nonstandard units as well measuring using inches and feet.
In the attached envelope you will find a length of string. We would like your child to choose a favorite toy that is shorter than the length of this string. They are to cut the string to the length/height of the toy. In our classroom we will be measuring, comparing, and ordering these lengths.
Please return the string in the attached envelope no later than Tuesday, January 22, 2013.
Thank you for your help with this activity. Please be sure and ask your child to share the results of our investigations.
Sincerely,
Sue Delaney
