Country Studies — Published by the Library of Congress, this online series presently contains studies of 85 countries. This site goes into more detail than the World Factbook about the history and social structure of a country.

New York TimesRecommended World news organized by country, including breaking news and archival articles published in The New York Times. Also includes a list of Web sites about the country as selected by editors of The New York Times.

World Factbook – Published by the CIA, this site provides information (mostly statistics) about all of the countries, islands, continents and the oceans of the world. The information includes a map, a picture of the flag, and information about the geography, the people, the government, the economy, communications, transportation and the military.

Freshwater and Marine Image Bank — Photos from the Digital Collections of the University of Washington libraries. The Freshwater and Marine Image Bank is an ongoing digital collection of images related to freshwater and marine topics, in all their diversity. It includes images of fish, shellfish, and marine mammals, pictures of fish hatcheries and dams and vessels, materials related to polar exploration, regional and traditional fisheries, and limnological (freshwater) subjects. Its scope is global.

Search Alexandria library catalog for books.  If you come up with a Calliope magazine as one result, that is usually an excellent source.
